Homebrew Biodiesel Fire

biodiesel fire

On May 7, 2006, a hazardous materials (HazMat) release occurred in a residential area of Colorado when a homeowner who was processing a tank of homemade biodiesel fuel forgot to turn off the tank's heating element and left for the weekend. The heating element overheated and caused a fire that burned the surrounding shed and equipment. The shed had contained >600 gallons of biodiesel and recycled restaurant cooking oil, smaller amounts of glycerin and sodium hydroxide, and 1-gallon containers of sulfuric and phosphoric acid; a mixture of these ingredients seeped into the ground during the fire. A certified HazMat team and the local fire department responded.

ReNew Years Eve Gala

Sundays Energy - ReNew-Years-Eve Gala

As many of you already know, I have started an exciting renewable energy company in Minneapolis called Sundays Energy. Since we began this summer, we have had some exciting projects including collaborating with Winona LaDuke on her White Earth Land Recovery Project, as well as hosting a "Green" Gala this coming New Year's Eve. We will be raffling off many prizes including a vintage biodiesel Royal Enfield Motorcycle to raise money for the ongoing renewable energy initiatives of Winona and Sundays Energy. The Gala will be at our office: 2637 27th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55406.

Update Letter

Recently I helped start a new locally-based company in Minneapolis called Sundays Energy (a progression from the Twin Cities Biodiesel Coop). We are a community and employee-owned renewable energy company that myself and the rest of our team have worked very hard to develop. If you haven't already heard about us, please take some time to see what we're up to by browsing our website at sundaysenergy.com.

We have projects involving biodiesel, which is a tremendously exciting renewable source for transportation, industry, and heating. We have solar hot water and energy-efficiency projects in the works, and we’re developing a strong community presence by offering affordable workshops. You are familiar with my ongoing commitment to a better world, and you’ve watched my growing pragmatism as I adapt my ideals to my knowledge of how things actually work. This is a project I am proud of, worthy of my time, resources and skills.

2003 Veggie Road Trip

Began fryday afternoon. Turned on the GPS and typed in Sausalito CA as I quickly accelerated to a smooth cruse of 71.9 MPH. Fifteen miles outside the city I stoped at a rest-stop to rid of excess body fluid when I met William, a manager from a local Applebees. He was having an absolutlly terrible week. Just ticketed for speeding, in an argument with his girlfriend, and finding out he would have to personally deal with overflowing amounts of used vegetable grease because the truck wasn't going to pick it up this week. William explained he needed a rest before heading back to work and explaining to another 100 people that the email they got promising $50 gift certificates for forwarding on an email, was fake. I told him he didn't have it all that bad and that I could help. He laughed and loudly asked how I could possibly. I suggested a card and a nice set of flowers for the girl. Offered a trick on getting the ticket to stay off his record. Then I smiled wide and said I would take as much veggie oil as I could! He flashed a quizzical look of "who the hell are you" and questioned with a slight attitude, "what about the email!?!"
